There are, however, three things that you can do yourself to ensure your system keeps working.
1. Clean the coils on the condenser. The condenser is the unit that is outside, perhaps on a wall.
2. Check that the condensate drain is clear and condensation is able to get outside.
3. Change your air filter regularly as per the manufacturers recommendations.
It is important to correctly isolate any unit before removing any protective coverings. If there is any doubt then always leave it to a qualified professional air conditioning engineer. In the UK engineers must have a F-Gas qualification and you can check the companies compliance here
